Introduction to Woodturning

Turning is as close as we woodworkers get to instant gratification. It lets you experience wood in a whole new way, as a curving, sculptural medium that magically takes shape under your hands on the lathe. It's a fast, fun way to produce useful and beautiful items for yourself, as gifts, or to sell. It's also a great way to expand your capabilities as you turn knobs, legs, and finials for your projects.

You'll learn two different techniques in this class. We'll start with spindle turning, where the wood grain runs along the lathe bed. You use this technique for pens, legs, tool handles - things that are long and thin. In this class, you'll explore the basics by making a cook's basting or BBQ brush, with decorative flourishes to liven up the handle.

Next, we'll dive into faceplate turning, where the grain runs across the lathe bed. This is for plates, bowls, and sculptural items that are wider than they are long. You'll approach this technique by turning a small bowl from green wood.

Over two evenings and a full day, you'll learn how to:
  • Sharpen gouges and parting tools
  • Select and safely use turning tools for different jobs
  • Set up and operate the lathe
  • Use chucks, drive centers and shop-made work-holding devices
  • Turn beads, coves, and tapers: the basics of spindle work
  • Mount bowl blanks for turning outside, inside, and finishing the foot
  • Shape bowls safely, with graceful lines
  • Turn elements to precise sizes for mounting or duplication

We'll supply tools, materials, and a detailed handout. Just bring your enthusiasm and prepare for a good time. No experience necessary. Turning is messy though, so wear a shirt or smock that can close up around your neck and will withstand pitch and water stains. Tie up long hair, and leave dangling jewelry at home.
