Meet one of the most versatile tools in the shop - the router. Hand-held, table mounted, or supported in shop-made fixtures, this versatile power chisel can help you with a wide variety of joinery, shaping, inlay, and decorative effects.
In this class you値l use small, hand-held routers and full-sized table-mounted routers to build a delicate, inlaid box from thin stock. In the process, you値l get hands-on experience:
- Pattern routing to shape the box lid and profile its edge;
- Using a router with hand chisels to cut square-cornered pockets for inlays;
- Making mortise-and-tenon joints to connect box elements;
- Cutting dados to house the box bottom;
- Making the bottom itself as a raised panel.
You値l learn how to safely set up and handle a router. You値l use shop-built jigs and templates to add accuracy and extend your router痴 capabilities, and you値l end up with an inlaid, lidded box like the one shown on this class page, ready to glue up at home.
WHICH CLASS SHOULD YOU TAKE?
Router Magic for Beginners or Router Fundamentals for Beginners?
If you致e just bought a router or want to learn more about using one you own, I recommend taking our Router Fundamentals class before this one. There you値l use your own machine for much of the class, working with thick stock on a wider variety of cuts. Router Magic is organized around the box project. It uses smaller routers and thin stock, so the tools are friendly and easy to handle. The two classes cover different material, and you won't find much repetition if you take them both.
Thinking about getting a router? Want to use it for delicate work? This class is for you, even if you池e a beginner. You値l have fun and leave with the ability to take your work to the next level with Router Magic.
