Router Fundamentals for Beginners

Are you a new router owner or want to learn more about the tool? You've got the most versatile machine in the shop. Now learn how to do great woodworking with it. Bring it to class (or use one of ours) and get hands-on experience:
  • Routing from templates to create complex shapes quickly:
  • Profiling and coping moldings for frame-and-panel doors, project feet, and table tops;
  • Cutting rabbets and dados to make bookshelves and cabinets;
  • Cutting arcs and circles for speaker cabinets, table tops, and inlays;
  • Jointing and slotting edges to join boards into panels;
  • Boring patterns of holes for adjustable shelving, jigs, and fixtures;
  • Fluting and raising panels for drawer fronts and cabinet doors;
  • Making a circle-cutting, offset base for your own router.

WHICH CLASS SHOULD YOU TAKE?
Router Fundamentals for Beginners or Router Magic for Beginners?

If you want to learn how to do small, delicate work, I recommend our Router Magic class. There you'll use our routers to make an inlaid box, and learn techniques for building and decorating small projects, including the “no measuring” technique for making tenons. You'll leave that class with a box, ready to glue up at home.

Come to Router Fundamentals to learn more about setting up and using your own router. You'll perform operations typical of the work most people do with their routers, and you'll use full-size stock. You'll use both hand-held and table mounted routers. As you make each cut, you'll see where to apply it in your own projects. You'll learn how to use shop-made router accessories to handle special needs. You'll leave with a specialized router base and several sample cut pieces. The two classes cover different material, and you won't find much repetition if you take them both.

This is a beginner's class and all questions are fair game. Come have fun, and learn to do wonderful things with your router.
