Introduction to Finishing

Do you wonder what to do at the last stage of a project—creating the finished surface people see and feel? Finishing is as important as stock selection or joinery, and deserves just as much thought. You've put a lot of effort into building something. Now learn how to protect and show off your project.

This two-evening class takes you from sandpaper to final finish. We cover:

  • What grits of sandpaper to use, and when to stop sanding;
  • Dealing with raised and fuzzy grain;
  • Eliminating dings and glue spots;
  • Controlling blotching in difficult woods such as birch and cherry;
  • Filling pores for high-gloss finishes;
  • Sealing the wood;
  • Applying film forming and penetrating finishes;
  • Leveling finishes and achieving the desired sheen

Come prepared to get your hands dirty (actually, we wear gloves). You'll work with several finishes, preparing sample boards that will serve as your references when you're ready to finish your next project.

This class is open to beginners, but will also appeal to experienced woodworkers.
