Introduction to Veneering |
Do you want to dress up your projects with beautiful woods in eye-catching patterns? Maybe you want to make more stable panels and tabletops, while dramatically cutting the cost of materials. Or perhaps you’d like a special project to feature woods you could never find, let alone build with, as solid lumber. If so, veneering is for you.
The most beautiful wood in the world is sold to veneer manufacturers. Wood too gnarly and unstable to ever be used in the solid is sliced into thin sheets to cover gorgeous furniture, cabinets, and boxes. Wood that would cost you $100/board-foot and more, if you could find it at all, is readily available as veneer. Here’s how to put it to work for you.
In this two-evening class you’ll make a book-matched, veneered panel suitable for use in a box or small cabinet. (A box plan is included in the notes.) In the process, you’ll learn how to:
- Find and cut out book-matched patterns like the one in the photo
- Prepare and tape up veneer elements
- Add pizzazz with inlay bandings and frames
- Use a vacuum bag for economical clamping
- Adhere veneer to substrates while minimizing bleed-through problems
- Trim panels square to visual elements within the panels
- Deal with glue spots in the finishing process
You'll also learn how to make the 3D box pattern known as "Louis Cubes"; a real eye-catcher.

You’ll leave with a wealth of knowledge about how to put veneers to work in your projects, and a pretty panel ready to build into a project of your own.
